Treat Excessive Urination at Night (Nocturia) in Elderly persons

If you need to wake up 2 times or more at night to urinate, you may have nocturia which is a medical term for excessive urination at night. Nocturia disrupts sleep, resulting in daytime tiredness, depressive symptoms and a reduced quality of life.

In Traditional Chines Medicine, kidney qi insecurity is the most common cause of age-related nocturia.  Also kidney qi can be differented into kidney yin defiency and kidney yang defiency.


Kidney yang deficiency:

excessive urination with clear and large amount, usually feel cold and like warm clothes, no dry mouth. pale and enlarged tongue, deep pulse.

Herb formula: sang piao xiao san plus.


Kidney yin deficiency:

excessive urination with yellow and less amount urine, dry throat or dry mouth even bitter mouth, red tongue with less tongue fur, fine and rapid pulse.

Herb formula: Ba xian chang shou wan plus


Chinese herbs work well for nocturia. Usually it only takes around 2 weeks to make a significant change. You can just stop take herbs when your night urine has been much reduced and it doesn’t bother you. The effects usually last a relatively long time. Or you can continue taking herbs for a period time to tonify your kidney to make kidney function better.
